North Quabbin Time Bank to be formed A group of students from UMASS Amherst will soon be launching the North Quabbin Time Bank as part of an independent study project. Time Banking will promote community building in the North Quabbin area by allowing neighbors to provide services to one another without having to pay money for them. Instead members will earn hours that they can use to have other people provide services to them. The "neighbors helping neighbors" concept isn't new to any of us; many people and organizations in the area already provide services for one another on a daily basis. However time banking will be a formal way of recognizing the work people do for one another, and it will encourage people to do more. Not only will people get satisfaction from having helped a neighbor, but they will get something tangible, an hour they can spend on a service for themselves, in return. Three of the students working on the project grew up in Orange, and we hope that the Time Bank will be a project that strengthens the community and promotes social change.
